Carl Wilson and Celine Dion, together again
Carl Wilson with Celine Dion! This is probably only funny if you’ve read Wilson’s book, which is, by the way, quite good, if a tad overhyped. It’s the first 33 1/3 book that isn’t a fawning mess of stupidity about which studio musician really overdubbed the bass solo on some mediocre Kinks song. (Full disclosure: even though I’ve been disappointed by The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Exile on Main Street, I’ll still probably read Loveless and Trout Mask Replica at some point in time.)
I just looked at the full list of them. Can you imagine reading an entire book about Aqualung? Jeez. Also: How exactly did Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle and Sebastian get on this list? I don’t mean to be a hater, but if we were to take the 25 or 30 bands that you’d think would become canonized into this list since the end of the 90s, I don’t really see those being two that would last.
Anyway, now that I’ve gotten rock-snobby about the books in mentioning Carl Wilson (who makes a pretty strong point about what’s wrong with rock snobbery), he’s speaking in town.

dear sasquatch,
as overblown stadium-based summer festival type concerts go, you’re not doing so bad if your headliners are radiohead, the cure, and gang of four. that is, you’re not doing so bad if your target audience consists of people who want to go to concerts with their teenage kids. yeah, what, i said it.
i usually ignore the summer festival listings, though 2 new festivals should be coming (sort of!) to town. those will be what i’ll most likely attend, unless i get my act together to make it to sonar or tha d.
jim black
i like jim black a ton. i used to see him in pittsburgh play in like a burned out old factory without any heat with like 15 other people. anyway, i’m just making sure i can put youtube things here, as that’s the laziest way to post.
